Food for Body and Soul

The Sanctuary Committee wishes to make Sanctuary as inclusive as possible and to aspire to a dietary code that honors body, mind and spirit with a particular sensitivity to the Earth and compassion for animals. Our kitchen is a vegetarian/dairy kitchen. Kosher cheeses and cheeses with rennet from non-animal sources are permitted. For private events fish with fins and scales is also permitted. (No meat or shellfish, please.)

The retreat center does not provide food. Guests may bring their own food and prepare their own meals in our fully equipped, kosher kitchen if they observe the guidelines stated above.

We are happy to refer prospective clients and guests to two excellent vegetarian caterers. Please call them directly for menus, pricing and availabity .

Outside caterers are welcome to use our kitchen (cookware, dishes and oven) if they observe the guidelines stated above. Or, they may serve vegetarian/dairy/fish with fins and scales (no meat or shellfish) IF they provide their own warming oven and dishes.

An example of an outside caterer that has worked well in our center is Ridgewells Catering.

Location and Directions

Sanctuary is located on Rt. 28 (19520 Darnestown Rd.) approximately 16 miles west of the junction of I-270 in Rockville.

From Washington: Take Rt. 495 (Beltway) to I-270 North. Take exit 6B (Route 28 West) towards Darnestown. Go approximately 16 miles. When you pass Peachtree Veterinary Clinic on the left and Lewis Orchards on the right, we are 1.5 miles on the left, just after Jerusalem Road. Turn left into the driveway. Go slowly or you will miss the turn. If you get to the traffic light at Route 109, you will have gone too far.

From Baltimore or Frederick: Take I-70 to Frederick and then take the exit for Rt. 355 and Rt. 85. Stay on Rt. 85 through Buckeystown and the road will eventually become Route 28. Continue on Route 28 through the town of Beallsville (at the traffic light). We are 3/10 of a mile past Route 109 on the right. Look for our mailbox with the street address 19520. If you get to Jerusalem Road, you have gone too far. Turn right into the driveway.
